Scalp Care the Ayurvedic Way: Massage, Cleansing and Rest
In Ayurveda, hair care starts at the scalp. Think of the scalp as the soil: when it is cared for, everything that grows from it looks better.
Shiro abhyanga: the scalp massage
Shiro abhyanga is the traditional practice of massaging warm oil into the scalp. A gentle five to ten minute massage with your fingertips feels relaxing and is a lovely weekly ritual. Leave the oil on for 30 to 60 minutes, then wash it out well.
When to go lighter
If your scalp is itchy, flaky or very oily, heavy oiling may not suit you. Use less oil, or speak to a doctor if the problem continues.
Cleanse gently
A clean scalp is a comfortable scalp. Use a mild shampoo and lukewarm water, and avoid scrubbing hard with your nails.
Look beyond the bottle
- Sleep well. Rest is part of every Ayurvedic routine.
- Eat regular, balanced meals with plenty of fresh food.
- Find small ways to unwind. Stress shows up in many ways.
Ayurveda is a gentle, long-term practice. Be patient and consistent, and let your routine become something you enjoy.
